This City (Worcester) needs to make some drastic changes and support it’s upcoming artists. Otherwise artists will have little option than to either relocate their practice to another town/city that does support and appreciate the visual arts or give up all together.
I have recently visited yet another new space set up by 8 recent graduates. They have secured the space rent free, only liable for service charge and a percentage of business rates, on a former industrial site that is actively encouraging artists to move in. This particular property owner – in conjunction with the support of the city council realises the potential and value that a thriving arts community can bring to the city.
Sadly Worcester lags far behind many other cities when it comes to supporting and nurturing the visual arts, and unless attitudes change it will continue to be a cultural backwater.
